Scheherazade Weaves Tales to Intrigue a Vengeful King


In University Theatre's Production of "The Arabian Nights"



CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The University Theatre at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi presents the magical play "The Arabian Nights" Thursday, Nov. 12, though Sunday, Nov. 15, and Thursday, Nov. 19, through Sunday, Nov. 22, in the Wilson Theatre in the Center for the Arts.  Performances are at 8 p.m. with 2 p.m. Sunday matinees. 


In Mary Zimmerman's award-winning adaptation of the classic Middle Eastern folk tales, King Shahryar discovers his wife in another man's arms and ruthlessly vows to murder every virgin in the kingdom. However, his brutality is interrupted when he encounters the clever maiden Scheherazade, whose captivating stories save her life. Amidst her thousand tales of honor, wit, and revenge, only love appears triumphant.



Zimmerman, the recipient of a 1998 MacArthur Fellowship for her original production of "The Arabian Nights," received the 2002 Tony Award for best direction. Kelly Russell, associate professor of theatre, will direct the play performed by an ensemble of actors, singers and dancers.



"The Arabian Nights," contains mature themes and is recommended for adults. Tickets are $8 for general admission; $7 for senior citizens and military; $5 for faculty/staff/students; and $3 for University students with their SandDollar$ card.
