Eugenia León, La Voz de Mexico
On Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 7 pm, Eugenia León, considered by many The Voice of Mexico will be in concert at the Charline McCombs Empire Theater in San Antonio, Texas. Hosted by the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, the event will be offered at affordable prices ranging from $8-$10.
Eugenia has brought people to their feet in ovation throughout the U.S. including the Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington D. C., the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, Millennium Park in Chicago and as part of the Sor Juana Festival in Houston where a delegation from the Esperanza Center enthralled by her performance secured her promise to visit San Antonio.
The only singer to represent Mexico in all the World Expositions , Eugenia has sung in Sevilla (Spain), Lisbon (Portugal), Hannover (Germany) and Aichi (Japan.) She was also the closing performer for the 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures in Barcelona (Spain) and at the 1995 Women’s World Forum in Beijing. She often performs with international symphonic orchestras as she did recently in Cairo (Egypt).
From the beginning of her illustrious career, Eugenia’s life has been defined by her love of Mexico, it’s people and their causes. As a child, listening to XEW radio, where San Antonio’s own Rita Vidaurri and Eva Garza sang, Eugenia learned to sing many traditional and classic songs of Mexico but when she sang at a family gathering an uncle told her that her singing was more out of tune than his bicycle. She left home in the 70s to find her place in the world and joined youth in singing Trova, the New Song Movement of Latin American, where her heart ultimately resided and flourished.
Thirty-plus years later, Eugenia, Mexico’s premier singer and guardian angel of Mexican culture and song, has recorded over 25 CDs and has sung in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, French and the indigenous languages of Mexico. Her range and style is as perse as Mexico’s culture and history singing everything from children’s Cri-Cri songs, to Norteño, to Tango, to Mexican classics to jazz, Pachuco Boogie and more. She is as comfortable with Mariachis and Bandas as she is with Cabaret and Symphonies. More recently, Eugenia León is reclaiming and recovering the roots of Mexico’s musical heritage with her recent CD, Puño de Tierra and her upcoming television program, Tocando Tierra where she will travel throughout Mexico to unearth the musical legacy of Mexico from its past to its present state.
Eugenia León will be in concert at the Empire Theater on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 7 pm for una noche inolvidable, a night not to be missed! Tickets will be on sale at the Esperanza office, 922 San Pedro and the Majestic theater box office beginning Monday, September 14th at 10 am. Contact Jessica O. Guerrero at Esperanza Ctr: (210) 228-0201 esperanza@esperanzacenter.org.
